Omura earthquake

Approximately at 25.2 °N, 123.7 °E—about 88 km NNW of Uken in Okinawa—this offshore point lies in the Philippine Sea on the eastern flank of the Ryukyu subduction zone where the Philippine Sea Plate is being thrust beneath the Eurasian Plate, forming the Ryukyu Trench and its associated megathrust; the area is seismically active, with frequent shallow‑to‑moderate‑depth earthquakes and occasional tsunamigenic events that are closely monitored by the Japan Meteorological Agency; the seafloor here is deep (roughly 2,000–4,000 m), marked by a series of submarine ridges and seamounts that are part of the Ryukyu volcanic arc, and the nearest landmass is Miyako‑Jima, roughly 50 km to the southeast.
